2. Base Preparation
A layer of type 1 or equivalent should be spread over the excavated area, raked level and compacted using a roller or plate compactor to a depth of 50mm. When choosing the base aggregate be sure to choose sharp aggregate with no holes; scoria-type aggregates are not suitable and can cause discolouration of the paving.
Preliminary compaction can be made by placing a plank over the type 1 and walking over it; then thoroughly compact the whole area.
If laying onto an existing concrete pad, it should be clean and free from dirt, grease, mould, paint, etc to ensure a firm bond. It is vital that the concrete pad be dampened to prevent absorbing moisture from the mortar and causing a weak set.
